To minimize the mismatch between power supply and demand, Electricity Act, 2003 provides much needed relief to captive power generation. This will be a big boost to utilize the unutilized capacity of captive power plants (CPPs) spread across the country. The act provides freedom for setting up a power plant by any individual to generate electricity primarily for their own use and also allows a power plant set up by any co-operative society or association of persons for generating electricity primarily for use of members of such co-operative society or association. Non-discriminatory open access is available to CPPs in both Central and State Transmission Utilities.
