PTC has been identified as the nodal agency by the Government of India for trading power with the neighbouring countries of Bhutan and Nepal. This is in keeping with the long term objective of developing India as an 'energy hub' for the South Asian region.

Regional cooperation acts to the benefit of the neighbouring countries which are surplus in terms of power by providing them creditworthy buyers. It also benefits India in meeting its growing energy demand levels

Power trade with Bhutan

PTC has signed long term agreements with Department of Energy, Bhutan for purchase of surplus power from Chukha Hydro Electric Project (336 MW) and Kurichhu Hydro Electric Project (60 MW) and Tala Hydro Electric Project (1020 MW). The present power trade with Bhutan is being carried out under bilateral contractual arrangements with tariff fixation based on negotiations between the two Governments. Surplus power from 336 MW (4X84 MW) Chukha project is being supplied to the Eastern Region constituents namely Bihar, DVC, Orissa, Jharkhand, Sikkim and West Bengal and surplus power from 60 MW (4X15 MW) Kurichhu project is too being supplied to Eastern Region constituents namely West Bengal and DVC. Surplus power from Tala project is being supplied to Bihar, DVC, Orissa, Jharkhand and West Bengal in the Eastern Region and Delhi, Haryana, J&K, Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh in the Northern Region.

Power Trade with Nepal

The bilateral exchange of power at the borders between the two countries is presently at a level of 50 MW and the two sides through Indo-Nepal Power Exchange Committee decide the tariff jointly at periodic intervals with underlying principle of meeting the cost of supply of power. PTC has been identified as nodal agency by the Government of India for trading power from Nepal on commercial principles. PTC is also in discussions with the developers of private power projects in Nepal and has initialized Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with developers of West Seti Hydro Electric Project. The West Seti Project is a 750 MW Hydro Electric Project and is being set up to export the entire power output to India. Alongside, PTC is also actively engaged in the development of Indo – Nepal transmission interconnection for enhancement of power trade between the two countries.
